I have to admit I haven't owned black jeans in 20 years! But it seems like denimheads are into them, so I took the plunge on some Black 2
I love how the white weft really shows through and the contrast stitching makes them wear like standard jeans. I wore them with a black shirt this afternoon and then a navy gingham shirt tonight. Both worked perfectly. I'm not sure what I'd wear with a blackxblack with tonal stitching.
Which black gustins are you rocking? How do you complete the outfit?

Which black gustins are you rocking? How do you complete the outfit? I don't have any black, but I think you could do a lot with that option. I was debating that BlackxCharcoal in the stock store, but opted for a shirt (with 10 denim in rotation and 4 more in the pipeline from LD). You've got a lot of options with black - you can dress it down with some retro New Balance or chucks/vans, or dress it up with some cordovan or black boots. I'd think any pop of color up top or neutral (grey gingham) or a red chambray would really create a clean look.

love black denim. IMO black and grey denims should be in every brahs closet. Indigo, black, grey, and brown should be staples. A minimum of one pair in each color.
I've got the Black 2s and the Cone Blacks and I love them both. Cones have tonal and Black 2s have contrast stitching, but both have plenty of white weft popping through. A black denim must have a visible white weft IMO. I dont dig the complete murdered out look on a pair of black jeans.

The only pair I have thus far are a too big pair of BLACKXAQUA. Gonna give 'em a hot soak and maybe a spin in the dryer next weekend to see if I can get them to shrink a bit. I love the weft on them and am excited to see what happens after some good wear.
I think I'll grab a pair of black LDs once I get my first order - I do have a black shirt on order with garish red stitching.

I like the red stitching idea - that's going to look good with the black. I may end up backing a shirt from Lawless - I might go the light route and either opt for the chambray or perhaps the Italian lightweight denim. As for soaking, I've ended up soaking almost all of my Gustin's to get the length shortened up a little. I'm looking forward to the custom length and specs of Lawless - perhaps I can break these in sans-soaking and see greater fades. The blackxaqua are unique - throw some pics up on the forum once you get them to your liking.

I'm also a proud owner of the Blackxaqua and Cone Blacks with contrast stitching. Both excellent pairs of denim. I'm in agreement with Ickes, having a weft that is something other than black gives the denim character.

I have the Black2. I like that I just do one cuff and you can see the red chainstitch. Had mine hemmed but saved the chainstitch. So I walk around showing that off daily. I think black is the easiest color to wear things with. Every color goes with black in my opinion. I can wear band t-shirts, denim shirts, dressy shirts. It all works. I just recently did my first wash in the tub and air dry at about 10 months and they did get slightly darker.

I love the Black 2. I just got mine last saturday and have worn them every waking moment. I read over on the gustin board that the Black 2 is the black cousin of the Okayama standard. That makes sense when you read the product descriptions. Same weight and everything. I was sad that I missed out on the Okayama standard, but now that I have the black cousin I'm not sad anymore.
Another funny thing, I'm not sure what I'm going to do with the Zimbs I have on order. I feel like the Black 2 fills the same role in my wardrobe.

Black2, imo, are amongst the top 2 or 3 jeans that G have produced. Just ace. NEED an 18oz+ version!!! No BlackxBlack for me either...damn, it's black - black, as in it'll just ROCK w/ a contrasting weft of ANY colour!!! (18-21oz raw Black xPurple, xMaroon/Scarlet/Ochre Red etc., xCoffee/Orange-Brown, xOlive/Khaki/Dk. Green, xHoney, xAzure/Teal...) All stitching to be same colour as weft - of course!! Pure goodness, imo.

I don't understand the lure of the colored wefts aside from white, off white or brown

I feel that contrast wefts are a natural & fun evolutionary direction/option for denim. Coloured wefts just open up newer possibilities. For example: CxC will just be such a sweet tonal marriage w/ tan/brown jacket, belt & boots and an olive workshirt. Coloured/contrast wefts open up more (&, on occasion, more interesting) outfit combos. Additionally, there are some coloured warp/weft combinations & contrasts that are natural partners/that will actually look sick from Day 1. (e.g. BlackxPurple, IndigoxPersimmon) A Biggy: Unique fades. Untucked didn't you post a pic of those mega-sick bluexblack jean fades? (Let's face it: they looked the SH*T!) I could really dig 2 or 3 jeans w/ well-matched (contrast, even tonal!!) warp & weft just as cool, viable alternatives to basic indigo, black, grey, brown denim. Mix it up, rock it up...another opportunity for dudes, like me, who relentlessly select blue, grey & black clothes, too...
DAMN, I still haven't stated my case clearly...Hmmm...I LOVE my Black2 'cos they have an open weft (which allows me to see another colour, off-white, which is contrasting). Now, if I looked down, & instead of seeing off-white, I saw purple, maroon, green etc., would I find it funky? If it was done well/artfully then I'd be STOKED!!!!! More denim weaves/textures are being investigated & produced - so, why not colour options, too? Call me crazy, but I seriously suggest some denim brands might consider consulting a pro/trained "Colorist" to suggest/divine new options & combos to extend & better utilize colour...more earth combos (?) etc...

Black jeans go perfectly with grey and black outerwear, which some shades of indigo don't really work with IMO.
I think the 'stigma' that tends to be associated with black jeans derives mainly from the cuts that people tend to see... usually skinny fit and often very cheap jeans that the more alternative scene gravitates towards (which are usually thin/stretch denim).
But a high quality black denim jeans looks great to me. Also agree with the comments above about it being flexible. The current trend, certainly in the UK, is to specifically pair black jeans (and jackets) with brown boots - something that used to be against 'the rules' but which has now come full circle (as these things tend to) and is considered the thing to do.
Only black pair I have from Gustin are the Japan BlackXCoal. They're actually a great denim. Due to them coming in so small in the waist I've been wearing them a lot in order to stretch them out. They went out an inch in literally 3 days worth of wear but I think they've basically gone as far as they're going to now (c.1.5" in total). Ideally, I could do with another 0.25" in the waist, but the fit's now pretty good as it is. I'd maybe prefer the thigh to knee to be a little smaller but the knee to hem is perfect.

I don't understand the lure of the colored wefts aside from white, off white or brown You don't have the black x aqua. It's like the weft show-through on the indigo persimmon, only it gives the black a nice Aqua tint. I'll see if it can be photographed effectively sometime. It definitely puts a nice twist on a typical black denim. about half-way to six months right now, planning on a wash or soak to see what happens with the look of them, hoping for something unique... That isn't washer fades.

Black x Indigo doesn't sound bad at all, but purples and oranges and greens etc is too eccentric for me (Especially if it has matching threads), and I'll wear nearly anything lol.

I love my Black2 Gustins. Icksey talking me into them. I've called them my "Black Okayamas" since I got them. I don't like BlackXBlack so the white weft is perfect for my liking. I think Julian is correct about the stigma with black jeans in general. That was the case for me being in LA - where tons of hipsters wore skinny - way too skinny - black jeans and boots.
I've got a bunch of grey shirts now and the Black2 is perfect with those and my black Lucchese boots or black Chippewa engineers...glad I got them. I actually thought about the Black3 yesterday...

*Caveat: these are my IxI's but it's the same patch that's on my Black x Blacks. So, what does that look like to you guys? I said before, I'm no "leatherologist", but that does not appear to be real leather to me.....

Cheap, thin leather... but leather.
The patch on my Japan BlackXCoal is definitely leather.

Does Gustin have a dark indigo that almost looks black (with a normal white weft)? I have a long-loved but pre-distressed (and therefore now falling apart) pair of BR jeans that is blue/black and I would like to replace them with something G or LD that is the same color.

The patch on my Japan BlackXCoal is definitely leather. had the blackxblacks for a minute before selling...the patch was very thin and cheap...had a bit of a vinyl feel to it. it was the first run when they were trying to source a black patch before sending that batch out. the blackxcoal patch is definitely thicker and better quality.
