I like arbitrary hatred as much as the next guy (looking at you, buffalo plaid, VAT and crooked shirts) but why the AE hate? Decent GYW construction, some US finishing and Horween leather. For the money, there isn't really a good comparison. I've largely migrated on from buying new ones, but still have three pair that should last me to retirement. " It's adapt or die. Would people really rather see them close down? They employ Americans and make a good product. Nobody wants to see any company shut down but I don't agree that AE makes a good product when put along side Alden. I know that Alden has experienced QC issues, but I don't think it's on the scale that AE has, otherwise AE wouldn't have the shoebank to offload hundreds or even thousands of pairs of shoes. My theory is that because AE is non-Union and because they mass produce everything there will be more mistakes. Compared to Alden whom employs Union workers and likely does smaller runs. Union workers have very specific skill sets that they've learned for years, but I wouldn't be surprised if older workers are retiring and a new generation are coming in to carry on the craft. I'm pretty neutral when it comes to Unions but I can see why AE might make more mistakes. Reminds me of the NFL a few years back when the Union refs wanted better wages. The NFL decided to play hardball and they brought in a bunch of inexperienced refs who botched a bunch of calls that effected the outcome of the game.

But their QC at least catches flaws enough to send it to the Shoebank. Alden probably has a similar percentage of seconds, but just because they don't churn out that many shoes/variety of shoes compared to AE, the seconds list will be significantly smaller.

It's definitely a numbers game but the only place that sells Alden seconds, that I know of, is TSM, and those seconds lists are pretty small. I'm signed up for their list in sizes 8.5 and 9 and when I get those emails I'm usually presented with a dozen, maybe a couple dozen at best and those sell out pretty fast. I'm talking about scale and AE can be found everywhere, whereas Alden cannot

And their seconds are about the same price as AE shell seconds.

Isn't AE a different price point than Alden? I'd guess also much lower production numbers.

Apples and oranges then. AE sells all their seconds in one place versus scattering them out, making it look like a high number. What I've heard of their seconds are still a good shoe.
