Saw this video over on mothership. Redwing, made in our great state of Minnesota. I actually have an acquantance who works in the R&D dept of the Red Wing plant. Long story but I was a groomsman with him in a wedding for my friend who is the guitarist in a metal band Cradle of Filth. He just left the band recently though. That was our music trivia for the day. Was going to get a deal from him on some Beckmans but scored a deal on Ebay. Maybe a different pair down the road. I have a couple good pairs of boots so you really don't need any more.
How Red Wing boots are made and how work type boots are popular.

Fun video to watch. Really interesting that they can't get parts for the machines any longer and have to mill their own as necessary.

Really interesting. It would be good to see something similar from other manufacturers of shoes, clothes, whatever.

Saw this on the G board. "I like the Beckmans, but because of the way the tongue and laces are constructed, they are a bitch to get on and off. Once I'm wearing them it's fine, but the process of putting them on is a wrestling match...at least for me." I agree with this. I wish the top 2 eyelets were hooks. I always have to unlace the top 2 to get them off easier. Waxed laces seem to be a pain also. They want to twist and because they are so stiff from the wax you want them to lay flat. They are still getting broken in so I hope as they wear in the off and on process is easier. Anyone else notice this? My Beckmans at a hard day of work.

i usually prefer wax laces and swap to them in many of my shoes/boots. my iron rangers came with woven laces so i actually contacted wolverine and requested a pair of laces from a pair of 1000 mile boots. i later found out that you can also get replacement wax laces from redwing, so i got a pair of those as well for backup. i don't find the wolverine laces to be overly stiff at all (or the benjos waxed laces i have), but i haven't put the redwing laces to use yet to see if they're stiff.

I currently have a one year old pair of iron rangers 8111 love them. Easy to get on and off. Broke in easy. Doesn't give the "clown shoe" effect some people complained about. At all. They are a true work boot.
Also have an unworn pair of 875's really need to bust them out but we are still having 80 degree days in RI for some unknown reason.

small offering of styles but notre-shop is running a 33% off BF code (BLACKFRIDAY) and it covers their RW stock. i ordered a pair of IRs from them last month during a 30% off sale and was happy with their process/service.

I've never had a pair of good boots before; if I decide to get some Red Wings, can I ask you all for some sizing advice? I wear about a 12 in sneakers, and I have flat feet, if that matters. Is this one of those "buy a size down" situations? Thanks!

So in my experience, yes size down.

same as David here - sized down a full size for my IRs. 13 in sneakers, 12 in dress shoes/boots, 11 in 1ks and IRs.

Thanks for all the info guys! I'm getting anywhere from 2 sizes down from sneakers to .5 sizes down from sneakers...
Maybe this is a difference between IRs and Beckmans?
I wear 12 in sneakers and I'm happy with a 12 in my only dress shoe (Florsheim), and I'm looking at the Beckmans...
Maybe the conclusion I should draw is I should really get myself out of my house and go check out shoes in person...

Yeah, the only downside is I won't be able to go to a store before this 33% off code expires. On the other hand, it's saving me from an impulse buy so it might be for the best!

That was the case for me and my experience reading about others. My White's are also 1 full size down. Also the case in trying on Wolverine 1000 mile. It seems like the high end shoes are usually 1 full size down.

My Wolverine 1ks worked fine at half a size down, but my Beckmans were a mistake at half a size. Should have gone a full size.

@winterland . . . you can get speed hooks put on your boots for pretty cheap at a cobbler. It's absolutely worth it to avoid the frustration. I tend to avoid using the top eyelets on boots for the exact same reason, and instead I get the laces a bit longer (usually 60" for a seven-eyelet boot) and wrap once around the ankle before tying.

I am with stinky. I just wrap the lace around my ankle.
