At some point last year, I seen these green Dr. Martens Hug Me leather shoes for $60. I remember when I was a freshman in high school, one of my punk friends (who copied all Bad Religion CD's on two blank tapes for me) wore green dr martens boots. They were too expensive and too ridiculous for my one pair of shoes per year allotment at that age, so now that I am old and have enough money, I had to buy these. My only hesitation was remembering that Dr. Martens don't make half sizes and they never fit right. $60 was worth a gamble.
Those goddamn shoes fit like a glove and I went nuts. My Fluvog travel shoes have worn down, so I got the red Dr. Marten 1461's and they much bigger than the greens, but still very comfortable and are now my travel shoes.
Then I seen the new 1460 year of the rooster limited editions...maaaaaaaaaaaaan, I was born in the year of the rooster. Those effers fit so tight. Silly me thought that the 1460's were the same as the 1461's in boot form. They are some sharp looking boots...for me.
Then the veg tan 3989 wingtips went on sale for $120 and the fake stingrays were down to $100 (both made in England). Stingrays fit tight, but I bought a shoe stretcher (that doesn't work in the rooster boots...stupid me didn't realize that until it arrived in the mail and saw that the mechanism won't work with a boot shaft) and the 3989's are some of the best shoes I have ever had. The leather is soft. The color is aging nicely. And the Doc Marten sole is awesome. I work in a construction office, so putting these with jeans is classy for where I work.
what is the point? I don't know. I bought too many shoes and I hate that I can now afford all of those awesome Docs with the crazy colors and patterns...because I am so old that I look like that guy who refuses to grow up.
Also, Dr. Martens have horrible sizing without half sizes. If you can find a pair that will fit, those bastards will be awesome after break-in and last a long time (at least in my experience). The downside is, the reviews of Dr. Martens is full of punk kids that don't want to admit that they bought shoes that don't fit...kids wearing two pairs of socks or suffering as the walk down the skreet looking rad. In my rooster boots, I am the latter...at least until my right little toe stretches out that leather just enough...almost there!
