I am looking for a warm wool coat. Something that is in between fitted and loose so I can layer it. I don't love double breasted, but I'd consider it. Sub $500 would be ideal. Something versatile that I can dress up or down.
Peacoat is the obvious solution but I've just never been a fan of the double breasted, and every peacoat I've ever owned has been so boxy.

I'd start with Schott and Filson.

The bond peacoat is less boxy and more flattering, but doesn't keep me very warm. The dock peacoat is pretty boxy, but it's warm AF. Wear thermals under the bond peacoat and you'll probably be able to brave freezing temps.

My favorite jacket and the most complimented one. www.guideboat.com/natural-wool-french-work-jacket.htmlIt is a boxy fuller cut but IMO Not baggy. Some here have bought one but returned because they felt it was to boxy. Very versatile piece. Dress or workwear. Very easy to layer. Warm

Glad to see this thread. I just came back from the expensive MTO tailors by my house looking to see what he had. I prefer more of a car coat style and am currently using something by JC**W called a "University Coat". I also do not like the double breasted or the double buttons ones. There was a LAUREN coat at the shop that was a cahsmere/wool blend with Thinsulate but had the double rows of buttons. Another more stylish coat made of black and white fabric from Scotland was more in the car coat style but thin and did not have a top button that buttoned. They were $400 and $450 respectively. I don't really want to spend that much, but I'd like a nicer looking upgrade and it's a PITA to fit me as even the LAUREN coat, at 46L, would need the sleeves let out a bit. I liked this one a lot but it's $700. unionmadegoods.com/product/harris-tweed-finsbay-mac-in-navy-herringbone/

Some day you'll get another person to buy one of those. Yeah, I'm not into the work jacket cut. I've got a bunch of fitted, high arm hole, skinny armed, tailored, modern cut, etc Jackets. Sometimes you just need/want a warm comfortable good looking jacket.

So I ordered the Le Labourer jacket. Will post here when I got it. I also bought a fully waterproof insulated parka from Columbia. I'm on their friends and family list so it was only $86 down from $230. That'll do nicely for non dressy occasions in the rain. I also got a ton of thermal baselayers and some running pants.
Before I did those things, I tried on a Filson double mackinaw long cruiser. Very nice and warm, but a little big in the medium (arms). Also $550. I also found an incredible Bleu De Paname wool single breasted peacoat that looked great, but was $450. I bought all of the stuff above, plus the Le Labourer jacket for the same price as one of those other jackets. I'm happy with my choice so far.
