I recently completed a gym bag made of 3/4 oz veg tan leather and waxed linen thread. The straps/handles/connection points are 8/9 oz leather. Today is my first day using it.
I have been using the same nike golf bag for the past 5 years and loved the size/features, but it started falling apart a few months ago, and the bag is long discontinued. The only sensible solution is to make one by hand out of leather.
My requirements were:
1. No zippers.
2. No metal-on-metal attachments or those awful metal swivel strap hooks that make noise/grind when you walk.
3. Fixed-length, non adjustable shoulder strap.
4. End-accessible separate shoe bag.
5. External pocket for temporary storage of passport/license/boarding pass while going through the security process at the airport.
6. Sensible storage for earbuds.
7. Shoulder strap connected to corners, not the ends (end-connected straps get in the way of shoe bag access).
In all, it took me a couple of weeks to construct this, working in the evening after dinner as well as some weekend time. I had an overall idea of how I wanted it to look, but frankly, but ultimately, I drew no plans and the design evolved as I went. I was going to use ITW CLASH/AK hooks for the strap (similar to what Gustin uses for the key fob), but I ended up going with #4 S-Biners instead (you can't get quality HK hooks in nickel/stainless).
In all, there's probably 15 sq feet of leather in this bag as well as about 50 yards of linen thread. Every single stitch is hand punched with a diamond awl. I used the shoebag and rubber feet from my old bag. Leather was purchased from the Hide House in Napa.
As with my other projects, I hope this inspires people to pick up a few leather tools and start experimenting with leather.
