I thought they were trying to get back to MiUSA? where'd you hear that? AFAIK, their shirts are made in Portugal, India and some other 3rd world country I can't think of at the moment. I once tried leaving a review on the Filson site for the Cascade shirt so that I could point out that it was made in Portugal but they nixed my review because it didn't meet their guidelines, and by 'guidelines' I mean the ability to openly and honestly review a product and its country of origin. the funny thing is they list all of their shirts as imported. I guess they think Filson customers are too stupid to figure out what imported means

Maybe I imagined it. At some point I swear I filed a mental note to consider Filson again. I am sending that note to the shredder.

To add to the MiUSA comment, i think their coats/jackets might be made here. But, I think it's something like 'made in the US of imported fabric.'

A company (like a person) has to know what they are good at and outsource when needed. Shirts, shoes etc are specialized.

My Filson gear was purchased many moons ago, when it was all made in the States. At the price point for their imported stuff, I can find better fitting, and quality elsewhere.

The question would be - Can it be purchased elsewhere for less? Don't know much about hand made knives but who the maker is drives the price.

The description is weird too. Full tang isn't possible in a folding knife, that's a fixed blade term. And $700 is just way too much, you can get a Chris Reeves Knife for under $500 and it's considered virtually perfect in the EDC/knife nut world. Maybe Filson is already planning on selling them at 50% off down the road.
Edit: the steel also matters, premium steel commands a premium price but n690 is nothing special. It's a good all round steel but CPM-S30V is sort of the basic gold standard among American made knives and considered a better performer than n690. I don't care about "custom handmade" moniker either, lots of knives are custom with better steel for far less. Just a baffling decision by Filson IMO.

Google robb gray knives. What an engraver! No prices listed, you know what that means.
Last winter during Filsons winter sale they had some similar knives. So they will possibly go for far less.

Anyone who's thinking of buying this knife doesn't want a factory made knife, doesn't want something "close" they want "this" knife and they are not worried about the the price.

Anyone who's thinking of buying this knife doesn't want a factory made knife, doesn't want something "close" they want "this" knife and they are not worried about the the price. I think the point is you can get a handmade knife made of better materials, from renowned makers, signed with their brand and likely just as limited, for less money than Filson is selling this for. And from those guys, there's a good chance that they understand there's no such thing as a full tang folder, regardless of the number it's stamped with. The irony here is that they're taking a handmade knife and stamping it with a factory brand -- and the best thing you can say about it is "it cost $700".

These renowned makers haven't been mentioned here. A couple options that are good factory made knives. Well known knife-smiths will have a wait list. The "full tang" thing was an obvious cut and paste by some web guy. The comparison was made to IH accessory prices. Last time I saw something there I liked, in two minuets I found the exact same thing for 1/3 less. I looked quickly and was not able to find the this knife for sale elsewhere at all. Only some fixed blades in the $400 range. Filson could easily offer up some no name knives stamped with their logo for far less but they are selling to a specific market.

I guess my point is that it seems more like searching for a target market than targeting a specific market, like the rebranded Shinola.

Bump to the top.
The Washington DC Filson store did a number on me this past weekend. I walked out the owner of a new waxed short cruiser jacket, vintage flannel work shirt, and a couple small accessories. I have had my eye on the Short Cruiser for awhile and while i'm always a "sale or discount code" shopper, it was the associates in the store that really made me not mind paying full retail. A quick stop by the store turned into almost 90 minutes of talking boots, denim, Filson, and all things in between. The only problem is that while i was in a frenzy my girlfriend was falling in love with the Women's Mackinaw Seattle Cruiser.
For sizing, i'm 6'1", 170lbs and went with the Medium in the short cruiser and Small in the vintage flannel. Someone on the first page of this thread commented on the billowiness of the sleeves on the jacket and I do agree somewhat. But it's not distracting from the overall fit of the jacket and will make the jacket a bit easier to slide on when wearing layers.
