i've used a saddleback front pocket id wallet for about a year. i like the design and it's aging well, but the leather is very thick making it a bit too large for front pocket carry. the stitching also isn't pretty, but that doesn't bother me very much for the price i paid.

I had the messenger bag and it was HEAVY.... Super nice if you don't mind the weight. The leather is thick and workmanship is perfect. It will last two lifetimes.

So they are a very over engineered leather product excellent, wils why did you give up the bag?

The messenger bag is probably the lightest among all Saddleback bags but was still kinda heavy to carry it around. It also lacks any compartment. After awhile, I just preferred something lighter.

First, the construction is unreal. Definitely a more rugged than refined look, but there is no doubt these products will take what you give them, grab their junk and ask for more.
Yeah, it's heavy alright. I have the front pocket briefcase, and it's by no means light. However, I don't find it too heavy. I mean, I carry it back and forth to my office during the week, I've taken it on overnight trips, and walked for miles all over Austin in September (HOT) with it loaded down with all sorts of stuff and it honestly wasn't so bad.
I carry my laptop, phone, chargers, notebooks, headphones, umbrella, sunglasses/glasses, wallet, flashlight, gloves, blah blah blah and it just swallows it all. You'll know it's on your shoulder, but I don't find it too heavy.
I like the front pocket brief, it's got compartments and all sorts of pockets and is in between the size of the regular "thin" and "classic" briefcases. I'm VERY happy with it.

I currently carry a classic medium briefcase in Chestnut.. Love the bag and the construction, hate how much it weighs.. It is a good thing that I don't have to walk long distances carrying it.

Heavy jackets are only heavy when you carry them, not when you wear them. A case is another thing altogether!

The problem I have with this statement is that the weight is a direct result of the construction. Remove all the metal shanks and double layer full grain leather and it no longer has the same construction. It would be cool to see titanium, but I already can't afford saddleback, and it would likely save maybe a quarter to half pound.

exophobe You are right that the weight is the result of the construction. The bag is definitely something that will easily last more than a 100 years. I have had mine for a while and it has not even started breaking in yet.. However when I bought the bag, I bought it more for looks. I would happily trade for a bag in the same design that is made of a leather that is half as thick and weighed half as much. Granted it might not last as long, but the way I use my bags, it would easily outlast me.. I currently also have a Hudson Satchel from Bexar Goods in medium Brown and have yet to start using it.. It is a lot lighter and equally well built with Bridle leather.

It's actually a really generous look into their construction, despite the tone, and you can definitely see how the components start adding in to the weight. Saddleback uses some great leather, though -- I believe it's a tannery run by his brother -- and they also recently took control of their entire production chain, and I believe took ownership of the shop that makes them in Mexico. Those Bexar's look great, too. Satchel and Page also seems to be doing great work out of Austin, and they just launched a jacket campaign on kickstarter(waxed cotton field jacket and several leather styles) which offers some decent deals if you're in the market for that. Their leather bags look to be similar quality with a little bit more modern styling.

I have the Saddleback large thin briefcase. It was a present from my parents for getting my PhD, and it is basically the raddest thing I own. It is heavy, but I don't care once bit. When Saddleback was having their clearance sale on all their charcoal colored things a while back I almost got another Saddleback bag...
