Ok, so you guys are like a dream focus group so....I have a proposition. We need messenger bag inspiration. What do you like? Why do you like it? We've got our own ideas but we're in this to make gear for you guys....so....speak up. Here's the deal: post up a few pics (or one if thats all you've got) of your favorite messenger bag and drop 5 or 6 sentences about why it kicks ass. External pockets? Liners? Internal pockets or just one big ol bag? Zippers? Straps? Secret compartment for your vintage Luger? Colors, features, features, features. We are NOT going to rip anyone off but we are seeking inspiration. What do y'all like? What makes you want to puke? Spill it dudes. I can't promise you'll see your ideas incorporated but I can promise youn this.....on September 15th we'll have a drawing with everyone who responds and you will have a shot at a free belt. You call it...color..weight etc. Just pick somthing we've made before. If you win, it's yours for the price of a mouse turd. We'll video the drawing. No shenanigans. Mods,,,,move this to general if it's more appropriate Edit....tagging benjaminpersitz becasue he's been asking me about bags for a while

I like the Moose Heirloom messenger bag from The Leather Shop.. My perfect bag is a messenger/postal hybrid with the following specs.. - 3-4 lbs weight (I owned a saddleback for a couple years and the weight gets uncomfortable soon).
- 5-6 oz leather.
- No lining.
- Just one compartment on the back for a laptop/tablet and few accessory slots on the front of that compartment..
- Postal bag type straps that are not on the sides but the back. This makes carrying the bag over the shoulder really comfortable.
- Carry handle
- 15"*11"*5" works out to be a good size.
- Closure like the heirloom bag. Easy to work with and no leather to tear or rip at the buckle.
The Satchel & Page mailbag is another one I like..

Everything about this bag is amazing: kendalhyde.com/products/classic-satchel-new-design-Vegetable tanned leather in a natural option -Heavy, thick, leather -Fits a large computer -Minimalist design with no branding I also think built in pen slots like the G briefcase is nice.

Billykirk Schoolboy - Medium brown Likes: The color - it's bright but not too bright, so it contrasts enough with most CXL products I have, and have seen around, like boots and belts The size is perfect - Fits a 13 in. laptop snug but not too snug The extremely minimal yet secure enough closure The matching detachable leather shoulder strap (not pictured) attaches to the back and not the sides, making for more comfortable carry The boxy design gives it a part-satchel / part-briefcase feel, which I feel like sets it apart from most satchels I see around... I feel like it's more classy The fact that there's a handle The fact that there are 2 compartments and that's that. Dislikes: I really wish all of the Schoolboys had brass hardware, and not the select few in dark brown they decided upon. I wish the leather was a little thicker - I'm all for my leather goods to get scratched and scuffed, but if you're going to design a boxy satchel, give it the ounces to maintain the shape. You can really see this with the divider in the middle and the outside flap Mixed feelings: I really like that the handle can slide down to be somewhat flush with the top, or simply pulled up to carry, but take a look at the leather piece supporting it. While I fully trust Billykirk would take full responsibility to repair this if something were to tear, but I just don't trust this piece to last very long, if I were to carry the bag by its handle, decently full, day after day. So, while I love the design concept, this flaw really bothers me.

tashdaddy - I have a couple vintage bags that the hardware is based on, I'll get some comparison pics and put them up if you'd be interested in comparing. I've been looking for that damn closure for about five years, and haven't been able to source it. I once sent the Billykirk guys an email about it but they never responded.

Liking this so far, thanks for the effort guys. I'm still working the bags in the back ground but I don't want to jump the gun. Nothing will get released until it's "right". These posts are helping with the "right" part.

i've not spent much time looking into leather messengers, mostly because if i'm going to wear/carry it around it's going to have to really conform to my body both loaded and empty. i've had a variety of messengers made from cordura, canvas, and some stuff made from recycled water bottles...but love the IDEA of a leather variety if it's flexible/supple enough to wear on my bike and toting around town. the features i like in messengers: either a center divider (width) or a pocket along the rear wall an adjustable shoulder strap (key for when my load changes) single exterior pocket under the flap single small interior pocket or slot for a pen

I think the market most definitely has space for a reasonably priced and well crafted bag, potentially offered in a variety of leather weights and a few different sizes. Minimize the hardware to keep it from getting too busy (that messenger up top is pretty but has too much going on to get me salivating over it). A fairly simple carryall can almost always find a home as long as the size is right for the owner to find it useful. Also, assuming we're talking about a single strap bag, the strap needs to be versatile enough to tighten the bag down for physical activities, or support conversion to a backpack style carry/something that will hold it still while on a bike or whatever. Look to what incase, chrome or timbuk2 do with their messenger bags, I think Mission Workshop came up with a quick adjust as well. I think the trick is in keeping it from looking like a bike messenger bag for those that aren't bike messengers. I don't know if the two can be successfully straddled, so I say pick the more classic one and let your buyers sort it out.

OK guys, better late than never! I finally did the "drawing". My elaborate plans were changed a bit and I used www.random.org/ to determine a winner based on the number of responses. Result - DigDug! Hit me up via PM and tell me what you want!
