I'm thinking of applying for another job and wanted your unsolicited advice on proper interview attire. The company in question is a food co-op and my assumption is that due to the nature of the company a suit & tie is going overboard. In this instance, would a sport coat, OCBD and chinos be sufficient? Anything I should avoid?

Nice pair of boots (Alden Indys) and a watch. Don't wear a silk tie, go with a cotton or linen one. I'd say you want a look that says, " I don't always work in the field But when I do, I look marvelous"

I can't see many situations where to an interview a suit and tie wouldn't work. I'm not saying suspenders, cuff links and a club collar but being out together can't hurt unless you are going for like a manual labor job on a fish boat as a lumper.

A suit always shows respect for the company and the interview process. Better to be OTT than look as if you've not made much effort.
For my last interview, I wore my trusty old interview/funeral suit, boringly looking the corporate part. Then when I turned up in my first day in the office, au naturel in leather jacket, black jeans and big boots, the guy didn't literally recognise me.
I hope not to wear that suit again until my next job, but it does what it's meant to.

I work in finance, an admittingly conservative field. I've had a few folks show up for interviews without a jacket and/or tie. It's pretty hard for me to give you a chance if you can't pull on a suit long enough to tell me why I should pay you. I'd wear a suit, it's easier to explain it away than to wish you had it.

I'd find as much info as possible about the culture as possible before deciding what to wear. Showing up in a proper suit to a place that prides itself in a relaxed environment can come off as too corporate and be a put off in some environments. smart shirt\tie\shoes are a must. I've had very good responses when asking the HR or recruiting person scheduling the interview what they would recommend. It shows you value their insight and they likely want you to get the spot as that is one less position they need to fill. Good luck!

Great point, @david. Especially if it's a larger/more beaurocratic company, HR will likely have more control anyway, so buttering them up is always good.

The company I'm going to apply to is a co-op, so it's very non-corporate. My fear is that if I were to show up in a suit/tie it would appear like i'm trying too hard. I agree that a smart shirt/tie/shoes would be more appropriate, which is why I'm thinking a sport coat, OCBD and chinos might be the better route.

I doubt if a Food Co-op has a HR department. I'd wear a blazer. No suit , to uppity for that type of business.

No suit , to uppity for that type of business. this particular co-op has expanded and are now opening a second location. given their growing size and the fact that they have shareholders, I think it's safe to assume they have an HR department. But yes, a suit would be too much unless I were applying for a managerial positition

If i were hiring I would prefer a guy to be clean and well dressed over a guy who arrived in a suit but looked sloppy. That said I almost always arrived in a suit unless I was looking for a job where denim was the norm This is the worst

Chipotle seems to be the local flatulance generator. Whenever I ever feel like fully purging my insides, that's the place I go to.

White Castle is the place that will help you eliminate and destroy anyone in your area. By far the worst of the worst when it comes to stankness

By far the worst of the worst when it comes to stankness Pretty bummed the only restaurant on my road trip I didn't hit. Sonic, Bob Evans, Buffalo Wild Wings, wawa coffee...no White Castle tho. Besides dressing well for an interview you also need to conduct yourself properly. Farting in you Armani suit is a no go. Also I wouldn't touch anyone's fabric/shirt people get testy about that. And don't whistle in the elevator.

Not as coffee like normal but as delicious dessert type treat once a year.

I don't know, if someone ripped a good one in the middle of an interview and totally owned it and was otherwise a great interview, I might consider that a positive character trait.

What if he walked in with some denim on.....with an amazing bulge fade? Then he ripped one.
