I'm a fan of natural/unscented soaps.. I'd do Mitchell's Wool Fat or Mike's Natural Soap.. both tallow based and lather incredibly well. If you're in the US, you can't beat the value of Mike's.. otherwise, MWF would be my choice. If Speick made a cake version of their soap, I'd be all over that.

Ok so movember is gone - thank god. I cheated and shaved the 29. I kept a little goatie. Used to have one when I was under 30 so I dunno if this is a crisis of some sort, but I gotta say I rock this little thing! So my soap is starting to be empty, any suggestions for a new one, preferably in its own bowl, and maybe from this site: www.barbershop.no/barberprodukter/barbersapeThere are a ton soaps available in their own bowls. Westcoastshaving.com has quite a few. It's funny, I've found that my cheapest soap works the best for me. I bought a Palmolive shave stick, ground it down with a cheese grater and packed it into a plastic soap jar I bought from mama bear soaps. Lathers great, smells great, is inexpensive and lasts forever

Dude.. is that a custom handle Merkur HD? The HD is an awesome DE razor.. you got some smart kids Custom? No, just one of their nicer models. Very heavy and long, which I like as I have big paws. Love the feel of it. It's a two-piece and non-adjustable. Didn't want that, and they convinced me that the moving pieces eventually get loose. It's really fun - I shaved drunk last night (not a good idea) and again today.

This is the set I got for Xmas from my daughter. Love it! Hey that looks alot like my setup with the same soap. The soap might seem cheap in its plastic bowl but is very good. If you use my routine you should get excellent results. Put warm water ontop of soap and let it be while you shower, then pour out and make lather right into bowl. Also wet brush while shower.

I'm liking the Proraso. It's the one for sensitive skin and it's working well. I have to LOL! at myself as I am shaving every day, which I do not need to do - but it's fun and reminds me of Grampa. Well worth it if you ask me.

Old26, give some of the English soaps a try. Trumper's Sandalwood and DR Harris' Lavender are both excellent.

Old 26 - I use a DE on the weekend - edwin jagger - and it reminds me of my grandfather too. It's also the best shave ever. A few recommendations for you - the feather blades in the yellow package are best but you need to go nice and light because they're quite sharp. A well priced english shaving cream is the taylor of old bond street - nice stuff. You can't go wrong with proraso though. I've used the green tube with the menthol. Anyway, nice gift - enjoy!

Thanks for the info jray. I'll check those blades out one this batch is toast. It's amazing how much different this is from the modern multi-blade crap that costs so much. I'm firmly an old school guy on many fronts.

You guys are killing me. I don't need another "hobby". I've been avoiding this thread because I knew I was going to get into some OCD heavy BS...and now here I am. So my dad is old. He's in his late 80's now and I started shaving in high school (in the 1980's) with one of his old DE razors. Eventually, he got pissed off because I was using up all of his Barbasol and razors and mom started buying me disposables. I moved out at age 18, years passed, electric razors came and went, beards were grown and shorn, disposables took over again and I settled into a beard and Mach IIIs to keep my neck from looking like a carpet a while back. Now, you jerks have me considering going back to this DE insanity, the shit that used to leave me bleeding and razor burned back in the day. Why? I'm not shaving my beard off. Ever. Every time I shave my beard, I hate life until it grows back. I am going to try this DE nonsense again on my neck though. It will be a while, I'll lurk here and there and try stuff. Eventually I'll figure it out. So far I've figured out I need a brush made with the hair shorn from a badgers ass and various oils and creams to keep me from shredding my neck...oh and a DE razor and blades. Then, shaving and bleeding until I remember how all this stuff works. Old26, your set up looks kick ass. OK guys, back to lurk mode for me on this one.

The neck is my worst part to shave and I still dont shave it against the grain bc I get red. I go once with and once diagonal (or as diagonal as one can go) but still usually nick righ on the adamsapple even tho I stretch the skin like mofo as hard i can to both sides i still nick this spot. I would recommend yellow fether-blades (worked best for me even tho i got pussyskin) and not too smooth brush, swine is actually better. Why? I hear you cry out...well...its harder and it will massage the skin alot better and really get the soap in there wich is cruical to not getting cut. I also always use the repairing stuff as aftershave and it holds down the red really very good. So: 1. Swinebrush 2. Yellow feather blades 3. Sensitive soap (the white prorasio is excellent) 4. Skin repair as aftershave: This stuff: www.barbershop.no/sul-filo-del-rasoio-razor-burn-repair(the skin-repair is from proraso)

I use a DE just to keep my neck and cheeks clean as I have a beard. EJ with Feather blades. In only get nicked going directly against the grain.
Thinking about mixing up some of my own beard wax. I already have beeswax. Just need some coconut oil.

I already have beeswax. Just need some coconut oil. we get our coconut oil at costco. it's the best value for organic coconut oil that we've found. we tend to use it for quite a bit...cooking, moisturizer, ingredient in homemade toothpaste, ingredient in g/f's eye cream, sometimes ingredient in hand cream, sometimes additive to dog food...etc

The razor that I posted at the beginning of this thread shipped to me this week, and according to USPS is due on Saturday. I'll let you guys know how it is. Overall it's been a well run kickstarter campaign (a lot of which is based on it having shipped pretty close to on-schedule), and they've avoided falling into a lot of the traps that these things tend to (creeping scope, design changes, etc). Anyway, here's a pic they provided of the final product, I'll let you guys know how it is in the coming week or so.

I like that it has adjustable plates depending on facial hair type/growth. I'd try it out but I already found my go to razor with the Gillette fat handle tech.

There are definitely issues with the fit and finish of the Rockwell, it's taking a bit of a beating over on badger and blade and reddit, but my impression is overall positive, and I'll still be giving it a shot tomorrow, I'll let you know how it goes. FYI, Rockwell has been responsive to the issues being encountered, so we'll see how they end up handling it.
