Hey guys, long time lurker, first time poster here. I really appreciate the lively discussion around these parts and have recently been kicking around a thought that I would love to hear some opinions on. If you were told that you could only have seven pairs of Gustin denim, but you could immediately select from anything they have ever offered, which seven would you pick? I ask because like many of you, I have acquired too many pairs of denim, imho and am looking to pare down the collection a bit. Based on my business casual daily job, there is just no way for me to realistically give enough love and attention to an over-sized collection. As such, I have targeted seven pairs as that sweet spot of allowing for enough variety in styles but all being small enough to keep them all in the normal rotation. So what are your seven? You can use whatever qualities are important to you, whether it be personal preference, versatility of particular pairs regarding color matching, weights, etc. I look forward to seeing what you come up with.

Grey Silks Japan Indigo Silks Italy Indigo Silks Italy IndigoxRed Silks Italy IndigoxGreen Silks True Blue Silks Backup pair of Grey Silks J/K..Sort of. The three I recommend to everyone are: Okayama Stds for indigo, Black2s for black, Italy GreyxBlacks for grey. Then Downtown Browns or (and) Raw Umbers for brown, and Summer Blues (for a light summer pair). Grey Silks for a special pair, and Super Heavies for heavier pair. I think Okayama Stds and Zimbabwes 15 oz can be interchanged, but a lot of people might disagree.

Thanks ickes! Happy to be here. I like your list a lot for the variety, as well as dev's list, as I think we have similar tastes. To set the table, here is what I currently have at home: rainbowID 3 zims heavy blackxcoal downtown browns heavyweights italy indigoxindigo cone black regulars blue 17s And then on the way I have: italy midnight shadow superlights brushed back superlights greyxblue raw umbers Out of the stuff coming, I think the greyxblues will be a great grey pair that I don't really have yet and the raw umbers, even though I have the downtown browns, had been the one pair I was eyeing for a while now. They seem to be a different enough shade to give me good variety. I probably jumped the gun on ordering the superlights as a summer pair because the brushed back ones seemed too unique for me to pass on when they came out shortly after. I'll probably have to pick one of those two as my go-to lighter pair when I get them. Once all those come in, here is what I could see being my chosen seven, at least out of what I will have readily available: 1) zims (workhorse indigo pair) 2) 23 oz'ers (gotta have a heavy pair) 3) downtown browns (great brown pair, pretty versatile for me) 4) raw umbers (for now, I don't see them being duplicates with the downtown browns, but will have to decide in person) 5) greyxblue (the grey pair) 6) cone black (I really like these, they get a lot of play for me) 7) one of the superlights (primarily for summer) This looks decent, but maybe I'll need to pull out one of the browns and sub in something like the regular (for more of a beater pair) or the indigoxindigo for the saturated look. In regards to the heavy blackxcoals, I just don't do the tonal black thing really ever, that was probably a misinformed purchase. I ordered the midnight shadows because of their uniqueness, so maybe I'll take a liking to them and bump something else out for them. That leaves the rainbow 3s and blue 17s which are just not special enough to warrant a place in the "perfect collection." Thoughts on those seven? Would you sub anything in (i.e. stuff I don't have) for any of those, knowing that is the general "mix" I am looking for?

I didn't even know they offered the Brushed Back Superlights. I've been looking for a summer denim, and those look like they would have been perfect.
Also, your list of 7 looks solid.

I have: Heavy Americans Rainbow ID 3 Heavyweight brown belt Japan blackxblack heavy apron Oak x teal dress shirt Grey x black leather duffle
Everything I own from gustin is great, wouldn't trade any of them. Wish I bought the viridian. As an artist I love stuff with oil painter's pigments and viridian is ancient.

Super Heavy Heavy American Okayama Beasts Black 2 Super Heavy Super Heavy Those are my faves. No typos Wearing a pair of Super Heavies right now, and I can confirm that they are keepers. I concur on the Okayamas and the Beasts. I'd add the Downtown Browns and the Raw Umbers. Round it out with something grey, like the Grey Silks. Oh, and I guess I get one more. I've never had loomstate denim, but I'd love to try the Zim Loomies.

Here's what I have (in no particular order): Zimbabwe's, Zimbabwe Superlights, 18oz Zimbabwe's, Okayama's, Bright Wefts, The Slate, and several pair of chinos. I have the Zimbabwe Loomstates on the way (is it June yet?) and those might become my all-time favorite.

1) Loomstate (you gotta have them) 2) Grey x Black herringbone (beautiful) 3) Okayama standard (great allround pair with a nice tint) 4) The naturals (nice to have for dressy/comfy situations like summer party) 5) Chinos (at least one of the chinos, they really are supernice) 6) Insert heavy jeans here for winter 7) Insert light jeans here for summer
1 and 3 will keep you ocupied during normal days for atleast 2 years to get them nice. 6 and 7 for cold/warm days The rest is for special ocasions.
I would not get too many blues that are supposed to get fades? Swap any of the others against brown/blood to your liking if you dont like natural or chinos.

Zim Loomstates Downtown Browns BlackxCoal Heavy Americans Kate Moss Sea Green Organic Hemps IxI Bright ID How can the Zoomies be in your top 7 if you don't have them yet? Who knows how they will turn out. Zimbs - basically my daily go to workhorse Grey silks - they dress up or casual work with blue and black tops well. Downtown browns - pair awesome with denim tops 26oz beast - because slim fit 26oz denim is a must! Super lights - 9oz chambray like, no startch, light breezy and it's awesome for summer. Super heavies - super soft sweatpants like hand feel, no startch, hardly a break in period at all. Warm soft just awesome 18oz good ness. IndigoXindigo - saturated, tonal stitching, should fade in about 3 years since I never wear them. Cone blueXblacks could be subbed in for indigoXindigo but I sent mine back due to sizing issues and never bought them again. So since I don't have them I didn't want to list them.

I thought we were just going for denim per the OP. I will say the two chinos from Gustin I have received are awesome and I strongly recommend them.

Probably, however im not very good at playing by the rules. And not to step on any toes, but seven pairs of new blues sounds insane unless you love the raw look forever on most of them. Yes there are other colors but i find it harder to wear gold, Brown, black and red so chose natural and grey.

American Sixteener x2 Oka Standard X2 Jades Grey Silk Italian Powder Blue
I would add the 23oz G's to this list if I'd picked a pair up but I'm assuming we are keeping this list to stuff we actually have. If, on the other hand, it's an "if I could do it all over again" list, I would go with -
American Sixteener 23oz Oka Standard Loomstate Zims Jades Grey Silk Italian Powder Blue
Duck Chinos kick ass too.
