Mattbert - very much agree with your comments above, especially those about other people's perceptions of jeans. Whenever I receive positive comments about my jeans it's almost always due to my wearing of unwashed raw denim, any of which has a distinctive look that most people aren't used to. Amusingly, I once had a girl ask why my jeans had 'ribbon' sewn down the inside. She was referring to the selvedge. So, yeah, anyone thinking it makes you look cool to anyone other than people who will be wearing jeans that they will believe are cooler than yours in any case is likely to be disappointed for the most part. Wear 'em 'cos you like them and 'uck the rest!

If it weren't for a pair of Gap selvedge jeans that I got on sale a couple of years ago for like $30, I likely would not be here. I still haven't washed them and I wear them occasionally. One thing that I like about Gap jeans is that they are completely generic.
I'm actually wearing a pair of tan Gap bedford cords as I type.

With all the new vendors and Rakuten, Gustin (and N&F) is no difference than a pair of Gap jeans to me right now. I know it's just your opinion and all, but that is a patently ridiculous statement. - Gap currently offers exactly one raw selvedge jean. It's imported and costs $108.
- Gustin, at this particular moment, has four raw selvedge jeans up in the store. They are made in the US and are priced at $80-109. Of course, you only have to wait 2-3 days before another option or two will show up. Most will be under $125. Some might be up around $150-200, but those are the fabrics you can't find elsewhere...certainly not at that price, and possibly not at all, period.
- N&F probably has dozens of raw selvedge jeans available at any one time. They are made in Canada and tend to be priced in the $150-200 range unless you catch a pair on sale.
If you don't see the difference between those three, then you're simply unwilling to see what is there.HFT

So tell me, erudite Englishmen that you are...did you naturally have the perfect witty rejoinder spring to your lips right then and there? Or do you, like me, suffer from chronic avoir l'esprit de l'escalier? Ugly American that I am, the perfect line that would have come to mind as I was lying in bed many hours later probably would've been something like, "To tie up my package! Haw haw haw!"

I do recall saying something about always busting open zip flies, hence the need for me to wear button flies.
Reader, I did not bang her.

Gap consistently has the 13oz japan raws for 30-40% off. They aren't faders but they are a pretty cool looking pair of pants.

I like the tinted weft, assuming that is in fact a beige tinted weft and not just something screwy with my display. They are decent jeans if you can get them at a steep discount (only suckers pay full price at Gap), but they are a little dodgy in terms of this whole "Japanese denim" thing. They are definitely sewn up in not-Japan, but it's a little hard to discern where the denim is actually woven . . . they say that it is woven on Japanese looms, but they don't actually come out and say that the denim is woven in Japan. "Japanese Selvedge" could mean that it is actually woven in Japan, or it could be a trade name, like the "American Hand Dryer" in my office bathroom which was made in China. With regard to the tinted weft, Mattbert, one reviewer says this: "Something that most people don't notice or just don't mention, is that the material on the underside is a brownish colour. So when the fades start to show, that is the colour that shows through and it looks fantastic."

Yes it is a biege weft. Not sure if it is unbleached or tinted biege. Pretty sure it is a sulfur base which can account for the color and lack of fading.

Oh, and since I never answered Diggy's original question...I would be more likely to blow that 300 bones on something like a pair of Iron Hearts* at this point because I have a perfectly healthy collection of "entry level" raws from 9oz - 18oz already. If I was just getting into the game, or still building out the wardrobe, I would absolutely go for 3x $100 jeans over 1x $300 jeans. * But not specfically IH, because I have yet to see a jean of theirs that looks like it would fit me. My grail pairs at the moment are made by Oni and Fullcount.
