So there's a new movie coming out starring George Lopez called Spare Parts. I know this probably isn't going to be an Oscar winner or anything but it's cool to me because it's based on a true story about four guys from Phoenix (Carl Hayden High School) who enter a national underwarter robotics competition against other prestigious schools across the country (MIT, etc..) with a budget of 800 dollars.
I'll go see it because it hits close to home for me. I didn't go to Carl Hayden but I lived several miles from there and my best friend in high school lived two blocks away from the school. You stand in his driveway and look down his street and there it is. I partied in that hood a lot, I'm very familiar with it, and I still drive by it a few times a month for work related issues.
the story is cool because the neighborhood Carl Hayden is in is straight up hood and these kids from impoverished backgrounds on a limited budget go up against all these prestigious schools. It's the textbook underdog story. The bummer part, for me anyways, is that they didn't actually film it in Phoenix. I believe it was shot in New Mexico.
Anyways, the movie might suck, who knows, it's just cool to me because it's a movie about my city and an area that I spent time in during my formative years. For that reason alone I will check it out.

Wanted to watch International Market aka Ode to My Father aka 국제시장, but the girlfriend wanted to watch Night at the Museum 2, so we compromised and watched Night at the Museum 2. Didn't see the first one, and besides Ricky Gervais being irritatingly bad, it wasn't a bad movie. It was sad to watch Robin Williams play his last on screen movie role ever. If you have some time to spare, and have already seen all the decent flicks out right now, then I'd recommend giving NatM 2 a go.

Had heard good things about Horns (Daniel Radcliffe) finally got to check it out yesterday. There was at least one moment where I thought to myself "Is this what Kevin Smith was trying to do with Dogma?", but found it overall quite enjoyable. Essentially, dude's girlfriend is killed, everyone insists he did it. He ends up growing horns and stuff. Probably a good Netflix movie when it shows up (it'll show up eventually).

I had no idea. Guess I didn't watch the first two, but it's not a difficult plot to catch onto. Again, not a must see movie (unless seeing it because of Rob Will is a reason), but not a terrible movie either.

Lost track after the second one. Alien and Aliens are the best. Alien 3 and 4 were fairly lame by comparison, although there are people that still like them. I won't even really count Prometheus as a proper Alien movie - it takes place in the Alien universe but is not a tie-in to the original film that Ridley Scott directed. Neil Blomkamp is a great choice for Alien, especially with his sci-fi track record with District 9, Elysium and now Chappie. Plus, based on the concept art he's put out, i'm curious where he's going to take Ripley's character. Her story arc fell pretty flat in Alien 4 imo.

Lost track after the second one. You seriously don't. The 3 and 4 are terrible, Prometheus is the only other one I'd bother with, and it's not great. Alien and Aliens are great, though.

Watched this on Netflix streaming and was pleasantly surprised. Thought it was very well done. Is based on a true story. I had never even heard of it but thought I would give it a try. I like when this happens as the movie is a total surpise. Unfortunately you also find many clunkers that you stop part way through also. Rescue Dawn with Christian Bale. Vietnam prisoner of war movie. www.rottentomatoes.com/mobile/m/rescue_dawn/

Went to see Mad Max: Fury Road last night. Has to be most spectacularly over-the-top action films I've ever seen, made even better by the fact that so much of the stunts are clearly done in real life rather than CGI (although, inevitably, there's a fair bit of that as well). It's also one of the only films where spoilers would never be a problem... because there's barely any plot to speak of. If you have any interest in this, I'd definitely suggest catching it on the big screen as it's beautifully shot and an absolute audio/visual tour de force.

Guys, do yourselves a favor and watch Kung Fury. This has got to be the coolest, funniest low budget short film of all time. It's basically an homage to every cheesy 80's action film. Should be on YouTube

Watched Inside Out with the girlfriend. It was a little slow and dull at first while you get accustomed to the characters, but then it builds up fast. Great movie, and it hits all the emotions like Big Hero 6, except this time it's more humanized, and you can relate to the scenes, so it hit harder. Girlfriend was crying in my lap, while I was tearing up behind her lol. Highly recommend for anyone to see for date night or for family night.

Went to see The Gift last night and thoroughly enjoyed it. Kind of a throwback to late 80s/early 90s chillers, Pacific Heights springs to mind in general premise terms, and is notable for having limited lead actors and locations. Although the first half of the film could maybe have done with a few minutes trimmed away, it still keeps your attention and once into the second half really comes into its own. The acting is uniformly excellent, with Jason Bateman playing against his usual comedy-based type, and the story itself unfolds in an unexpected and very interesting way. Not necessarily a film that benefits from the big screen but it's one that's well worth a watch - especially if you're bored of superheroes and cartoons. www.imdb.com/title/tt4178092/

I usually catch up on movie watching in the winter but took advantage of a free movie channel promo and finally watched Whiplash with the wife. Many of my musician friends have told me it is a must see. I remember it winning a few Oscars and they were well deserved. I am still tense in my stomach from watching it. wow. It will make you look at the Farmers insurance commercials very differently once you see it. Highly recommended to musicians and non musicians alike. Watch it.
