lowlifealliance seemed to have touched on a topic of interest, and I didn't want to clutter the Lawless discussion too much, so decided to start a pomade discussion over here. Also helps that a pomade expert just joined our ranks Lately I've been using Railcar Fine Goods and Uppercut Deluxe, both water-based pomades. I like the Railcar over the Uppercut, but both work pretty well. Been considering Lockhart's Goon Grease, as it seems to get good reviews, but not sure it's worth the premium over Sweet Georgia Brown or Murray's. Also.. not sure I want to deal with washing oil-based pomade out of my hair. What's your "go-to" pomade?

No idea of what pomade really is.... I use "Gatsby Moving Rubber Grunge Mat" for my hair.

It takes me quite a while to get through it, so I've been on the Imperial Barber Products Fiber Pomade for some time. Also water based, I like it quite a bit, and it's not very shiny. Keeps my thick hair in check.

I own/owned railcar, suavecito firm, layrite, and steadfast. My favorite so far has been the railcar. Best hold:shine ratio for me.

I don't know if this is technically classified as a pomade, but when I started going to my current stylist about six months ago she gave me a Paul Mitchell product to try out. Reasonably good hold (I don't want a hair helmet) and not too shiny, although it can be if you use a bigger dollop of the stuff than I do and you put it in while your hair's still pretty damp. EDIT: Full disclosure, I know next to nothing about hair products and I just do whatever my stylist says because I have a huge crush on her. Which is, amusingly, fully supported by Wifebert because she (the stylist) is gay. Anyway, feel free to ignore my recommendation because, to be perfectly honest, she could tell me to use mayonnaise and I wouldn't bat an eye before getting out my wallet to pay her $20 for a small jar of Hellmann's.

In my case, it also has a lot to do with her being just ridiculously over-the-top beautiful and wildly cool.

Dr. Rubins - Great old school Pomade
Layrite
Do not like Suavecito. Don't like the scent and the hold is not as good as the previous two so there's no reason for me to buy it.

Picked up a can of Murray's for $3+ at Walgreens.. better hold and texture than any of my waterbased pomades. For the price, it's worth a shot for anyone thinking about a non-waterbased pomade.

Wait till you go and try to get it out! I sometimes use it at the beginning of the week as a base. Then use the water base stuff (RailCar) the rest of the week. You need to use dish soap to get the Murrys out.

Learned this trick over at badgerandblade and it seems like the oil based pomade users have no issues washing it out. I'll let you guys know how I fare with it.

What stays in acts as a good base for the more expensive stuff.

Does grooming cover hair product?
I'm growing my hair out on top. Going for a slicked back, like Jake Gylenhal or like brad pit fury but longer on top. Just wondering what you guys use for product. I assume a forming cream or pomade but my hair really doesn't like to slick back naturally. Looking for a good holding product with some shine but not greaser look like Brylcreem.

I still recommend Imperial Barber Products. I use their fiber pomade (though I'm thinking of going lighter hold -- probably try the matte paste next) and love their shave soap.

My favorite is Railcar Fine Goods. It's water based, but a bit pricey at $18. It's also more than 100ml, which is inconvenient for frequent flyers trying to avoid checking bags. Best performing water based I've tried, though. Strong cherry/pipe tobacco scent might turn some people off, too.
Domesticdomestic.com has it for $18 with free shipping.

I have the american crew forming cream and it's pretty good. I am going to try Suavecito's original. Looks like decent hold, lower shine, but still good slickness and ability to out the hair back and fight my cowlicks!

Works great. The problem is if you use a water base Pomade you get a stiff helmet head (you can wait till it drys then run a comb through it). If you go with a grease (murrys, royal crown, etc) you get a playable product but greasy. Try a little Murrys (its cheap $3 at Walgreens). Then try some Axe (clean cut style. Also at Walgreens). Then explore others.

Just switched haircuts recently still need my hair to grow another solid month or two before it really looks good. I've been using American Crew forming cream been pretty damn good for me. I tried Brylcreem but no hold and my hair wants to fall forward.

Uppercut isn't as easy to work and has more tackiness, which is why I prefer Railcar.
