I always thought this happened due to the sewing. They sew in one motion swoosh from one side to the next and the feeder/string tension/stitch speeds are not all sync so there Will be pull and since its sewed one way one one side and the other way the other side we get this effect and its magnified when shrinking.
I have this on many shirts but not all, my ironheart ixi is sync Woho.
